Togo, officially the Togolese Republic (French: République Togolaise),
is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital Lomé is located.
Togo is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with a climate that provides good growing seasons. Togo is one of the smallest countries in all of Africa. The official language is French, with many other languages spoken in Togo, particularly those of the Gbe family. The largest religious group in Togo are those with indigenous beliefs, and there are significant Christian and Muslim minorities.
From the 16th century to the 18th century, the coastal region was a major trading centre for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast".

é um país africano, limitado a norte por Burkina Faso, a leste por Benim, a sul pelo Golfo da Guiné e a oeste por Gana. Capital: Lomé. Localizado no oeste da África, Togo é constituído por um estreito território que reúne povos de diferentes origens. O grupo étnico euê, o mais numeroso (45,4% da população), concentra-se no sul, perto do litoral, a região mais desenvolvida. A maioria dos habitantes vive da agricultura, cujos principais produtos são o algodão e a cana-de-açúcar. O país é importante centro de comércio regional graças ao porto de sua capital, Lomé.
Entre os séculos XIV e XVI, povos de língua ewe, provenientes da Nigéria, colonizaram o atual território do Togo. Outras tribos de língua ane (ou mina) emigraram de regiões hoje ocupadas por Gana e Costa do Marfim, depois do século XVII. Durante o século XVIII, os europeus praticaram na costa de Togo um lucrativo comércio de escravos.
