Latvia
Latvia (Latvian: Latvija), officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika),
is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and by a maritime border to the west with Sweden. Latvia has 1,997,500 inhabitants and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi). The country has a temperate seasonal climate.
There are five planning regions: Kurzeme, Latgale, Riga, Vidzeme and Zemgale.
The Latvians are a Baltic people, culturally related to the Lithuanians. Latvians and Livs are the indigenous people of Latvia.[13] Latvian is an Indo-European language; it and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages. Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history.

Letónia ou Letônia (em letão: Latvija), oficialmente República da Letônia (Latvijas Republika),
é uma nação europeia, sendo uma das três repúblicas bálticas. Limita a norte com a Estónia, a leste com a Rússia, a sudeste com a Bielorrússia, a sul com a Lituânia e a oeste com o mar Báltico.
Banhada pelas águas geladas do mar Báltico, tem litoral pantanoso, com dunas de areia e importantes portos pesqueiros. Riga, a capital, é a maior capital das repúblicas bálticas. No bairro histórico de Riga misturam-se edificações medievais e prédios art nouveau, declaradas patrimônio da humanidade. As florestas cobrem quase metade do território, o que favorece o turismo ecológico, em especial na cidade de Sigulda, rodeada de cavernas, bosques e corredeiras. Ex-república da União Soviética, a Letônia conquista a independência em 1990.
O território hoje conhecido como Letônia tem sido habitado desde 8000 a.C. Na primeira metade de 3000 a.C., as primitivas tribos bálticas chegaram ao território.
